At some point in his life he joined the Franciscan order, and as a friar he signed several of his works with the name Fra Luca da Borgo Sansepolcro. His great passion was mathematics, which he saw as the key to understanding the world and also to putting business in order. The Venetian method described in the Summa

In his treatise, Pacioli described the way Venetian merchants kept their accounts, the so-called alla veneziana method. His recommendations formed a complete process that can be summarized as follows:

  • Initial inventory: before recording any transaction, the merchant had to make an ordered list of all his goods, debts and claims, to know his starting point with precision.
  • Memorandum book, or memoriale: note down each transaction at the moment it happened, without waiting until the end of the day, with every detail: date, person, goods, price and conditions.
  • Journal, or giornale: move those transactions into a book in chronological order, expressing each one in terms of debit and credit, together with a short explanation.
  • Ledger, or quaderno: transfer each movement to its corresponding account, so that every customer, supplier, kind of goods or type of expense had its own recording space.
  • Trial balance: when closing the book, add up all debits and all credits separately; if the totals matched, the book was well kept.

Pacioli also advised writing the date on every entry, using a single numbering system, leaving no blank spaces in the books to prevent alterations, and carrying the balances over when opening a new book. Instructions like these, which today seem elementary, turned his treatise into a practical manual that European merchants followed for centuries and that commercial schools copied again and again.

The relationship with Leonardo da Vinci

Around 1496 Pacioli was in Milan, at the court of Ludovico Sforza, where he crossed paths with Leonardo da Vinci. The two men shared a deep interest in mathematics, geometry and the study of proportion, and that affinity brought them together. It is considered likely that Leonardo attended Pacioli's lessons and took part in creating the geometric illustrations that accompany De divina proportione, although historians debate the exact extent of that collaboration.

It is wise to be cautious about the details of this relationship, because many popular anecdotes about the friendship between Pacioli and Leonardo come from later reconstructions rather than from documents of the time. What is reasonably documented is that the two men met, shared intellectual interests and influenced each other: Leonardo's notebooks show fascination with the same mathematical topics Pacioli taught, and the divine proportion interested them both equally. That closeness between the mathematician and the artist nicely symbolizes the spirit of the Renaissance, where science and art walked together.

Why he is called the father of modern accounting

The fact that Pacioli did not invent double entry takes nothing away from his merit, because his role in history was equally decisive: he turned it into a known, orderly and teachable method. Before the Summa, accounting knowledge was practical, local and passed by word of mouth among merchants. After the Summa, there was a reference text that any educated person could consult, copy, translate and teach.

For that reason he is recognized as the father of modern accounting, an honorary title that celebrates his work of systematization and dissemination. Technology changed the media, but not the logic.
