Brazil cuts gasoline taxes and Petrobras halts its announced price increase

Petrobras is the oil company of the Brazilian state. It announced a rise in the price of gasoline. Then it went back and canceled it.

A source cited by O Globo said it was a misunderstanding. The canceled change was 0.19 reais per liter. The real is the money of Brazil.

Petrobras gave a discount to its clients. That discount ended. So the price of "gasoline A" is now 3.05 reais per liter.

"Gasoline A" is pure gasoline. Petrobras sells it to the distributors. They mix it with ethanol later.

Petrobras says the price with taxes included will be 0.19 reais per liter cheaper than until Wednesday the 9th.

The government signed a decree, an order from the government. The decree cuts the federal taxes on gasoline.

Federal taxes are charged by the central government. The cut is 0.19 reais per liter.

The decree also cuts taxes on hydrous ethanol, a fuel from plants. That cut is also 0.19 reais per liter.

The government also signed a provisional measure, a rule with the force of law. It creates a subsidy for diesel, government help to lower a price.

The National Petroleum Agency (ANP) gave data from August 30 to September 5.

Gasoline cost 6.51 reais per liter. Diesel S-10 cost 6.88 reais. Hydrous ethanol sold for 3.95 reais per liter.

The refinery receives 27.3%. A refinery turns oil into gasoline.

Distribution and sale are 24.6%. The state tax is 24.1% and each state charges it. Anhydrous ethanol costs 13.7%. Federal taxes are 10.3%.

Brent oil went above US$107 on September 10. Brent is used as a price reference.

The price of fuel is an election issue in Brazil. Fuel subsidies already cost 37.5 billion reais, according to O Globo.
