Dollar rises in Colombia to 3,208.66 pesos and how it hits your pocket
The dollar rose again in Colombia. For September 23, 2026, the Banco de la República set the TRM at 3,208.66 pesos. The TRM is the official dollar price that the bank sets for the next day. It is the highest level of the month.
A week earlier, on September 16, the TRM was 3,100.45 pesos. In seven days it climbed 108.21 pesos, or 3.5%. Today each dollar costs almost 109 pesos more.
It had not been that high since September 1, when it was 3,213.97 pesos. It is still far from the highest level of the year, 3,797.64 pesos.
Why it went up
The cause comes from the United States. On September 16, 2026, the Federal Reserve, that country's central bank, raised its rates to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%.
With high rates, investing in the United States pays more. Investors buy dollars and the Colombian peso weakens.
Who wins and who loses
- Whoever exports or sells in dollars wins: every dollar leaves more pesos.
- Whoever receives remittances wins: money that arrives in dollars is exchanged for more pesos.
- Whoever buys online abroad loses: the same product costs more pesos.
- Whoever travels abroad loses: hotels, tickets and meals demand more pesos.
- Whoever holds a dollar debt loses: every payment asks for more pesos.
A pricey dollar makes imports more expensive: companies pay more for what they bring from abroad. Part of that cost reaches the final price and pushes up prices inside the country.
In the market the price is not the same as the TRM. El Tiempo reported that on September 22 the dollar closed at 3,208.71 pesos, 16.18 pesos above that day's TRM. Infobae reported a weekly rise of 120.65 pesos, or 3.93%.
Portafolio wrote that the Federal Reserve hardens the outlook for the peso and that the dollar could come close to 3,300 pesos this week, according to that outlet. Bloomberg Línea asked whether cheap dollars are over.
