Petrobras to drill three new wells in the Foz do Amazonas from January 2027

Petrobras is Brazil's state-owned oil company. The company will send a drilling rig to the Foz do Amazonas basin in January 2027. The area is off the coast of Amapá state, and there the company will start to drill three new wells.

An exploration well is a hole drilled to find out if there is oil and if it can be used. The three wells are called Manga, PAD Morpho and Crotalus. They are in the FZA-M block, very close to the Morpho well.

The permit has already arrived. Brazil's environment agency, Ibama, authorized the drilling of the three wells on 4 September 2026.

There is a wait. The reason is logistics: the company must wait for the NS-43 rig, which works today in the Búzios field. Later it will travel to Amapá.

Petrobras has already found oil there. On 14 August 2026 the company said it found oil in the Morpho well. The well is about 175 kilometers from the coast of Amapá. That is like a two-hour drive by car. Drilling at Morpho will end in October 2026.

The three wells will help find out if the oil in the area is commercially viable. Commercially viable means the oil is enough to pay for the investment.

The plan was presented in August 2026. It expects investments of 2.5 billion dollars. Petrobras wants to drill 15 wells in the Equatorial Margin between 2026 and 2030.

The Equatorial Margin is Brazil's new oil frontier. It is the strip of sea that goes from the coast of Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte. There, companies look for oil similar to the oil of Guyana and Surinam, neighboring countries with large discoveries.

With these three wells, Brazil wants to know if the Foz do Amazonas can be an oil producer. The answer will come after the drilling, which will start in January 2027.
